GLP-1 · 7 min read

How much protein you actually need on a GLP-1.

Most women on a GLP-1 need roughly 0.6–0.8 grams of protein per pound of goal body weight daily, spread across smaller meals since appetite is reduced — and protein first, before anything else on the plate, matters more than the exact number.

The short answer

Protein first, at every meal, before anything else on the plate. On a GLP-1, you are eating less overall, which means every meal has to work harder nutritionally than it used to. Skipping that principle is the single fastest way to lose muscle along with fat — and muscle, once lost, is far harder to rebuild than it was to keep.

Why appetite loss makes protein harder, not less important

I hear the same thing from almost every new client on a GLP-1: “I'm just not hungry, so I eat whatever sounds okay.” That instinct makes sense and it is exactly backwards. When total food intake drops, the body still needs a floor of protein to preserve muscle — it just has fewer calories left over to get there, which means the protein has to come first, not last, in whatever you do eat.

This is not a willpower problem. It is a math problem, and it is solvable with structure rather than more discipline.

How much is actually enough

A commonly used range in sports nutrition for someone actively losing weight is roughly 0.6 to 0.8 grams of protein per pound of goal body weight per day — higher than most general dietary guidance, and higher than most people eat by default. On a reduced appetite, hitting that number usually means treating protein as the anchor of every meal and snack rather than an afterthought at dinner.

Exact numbers matter less than the pattern: protein at breakfast, protein at lunch, protein at dinner, and a protein-forward option for the one snack most people still want. The GLP-1 guide covers where this fits into the bigger picture.

What it looks like in a real day

Breakfast built around eggs, Greek yogurt, or a protein shake instead of something carb-forward. A lunch where the protein portion is decided first and everything else fills in around it. A dinner where a smaller overall plate still keeps its protein portion close to full size, because that is the part that should shrink last, not first.

None of this requires special food. It requires deciding the protein before you decide the rest of the plate, every time.

What to do when you can't finish a meal

Some days, appetite drops so far that finishing any meal feels impossible. On those days, a protein shake or a small high-protein snack that takes two minutes to get down is worth more than a full meal you cannot get through. This is one of the things logged in the daily check-in, so it is a pattern your coach sees, not something you have to explain from memory three weeks later.

How this connects to strength training

Protein without a reason to keep the muscle it is protecting is only half the plan. Muscle loss on GLP-1s and the two things that prevent it covers the training half, and coaching and training at Optimal Wellness Clinic is where the two come together — one coach, reading the same plan your prescriber does, not a separate app guessing at both.
